From the game program 27th October v. Plymouth Cannons
It was nice to get that win against Plymouth Raiders! I’m a very firm believer in modern Olympics founder Baron de Coubertin’s “The most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle, the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well” and Vince Lombardi’s “Winning isn’t everything, but wanting to win is”.
To me, those two quotes means that every time you play, you strive for the perfect game, you give all you have mentally and physically, you leave nothing out there on the court. If you have given everything you have and come up short, giving everything has still made you a better player, a better team. If you win and don’t push yourself, you’re not becoming any better. Dwight D. Eisenhower said it this way: “There is no victory at bargain basement prices”.
We haven’t yet played a perfect game. Not by far. But we are on a journey towards it where we try to become better with each practice, with each game. Whether we win or loose, we learn from each game and come out a better and tougher team. It was nice to get that win, but we’re not resting on our laurels, we know bigger and better teams are waiting ahead.
One of those bigger and better teams are Plymouth Marjon Cannons – last year known as Tamar Valley Cannons. Last year we got out-rebounded and out-played by Cannons in three games. This year they will again be bigger than us, but, as Dwight D. Eisenhower said: “What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight - it’s the size of the fight in the dog”.
