Saturday saw the U16 Crusaders travel down to the South East coast to play Sussex Bears.
The scoring started with Cameron Lawrence finishing inside and drawing a foul. Will Raife then hit his first three of the game followed by Sam Alajiki as Sussex sat in their zone defence. The home team found ways to score with Kent lacking focus on defence, the period ended 14-18.
The second quarter was very tight with neither team able to string stops and scores together. Evan Longman came on and bought energy on defence and speed on offence. Anis Saidi then came off the bench to hit a corner three before Julius Sireikis scored the last basket off the half to keep the lead for Kent 33-37.
After the break the away side struggled to score, missing easy chances in the paint, Will Raife still had a hot hand and connected from behind the arch twice. Josh Barcelona playing in his first game of the season after coming back from injury scored his first points with a good assist from Owen Longman. Bears took this quarter by three points but Kent still had the lead 51-52.
The last ten minutes Ryan Ganniclefft continue to push the ball in the fast break creating opportunities for all his teammates. Six different players scored in this quarter but it was Will Raife that took the limelight as he carried on hitting threes finishing with seven in total. The game finished 67-77 to Crusaders seeing them move to a record of 4-3 in the league and sitting in 3rd.
Coach Davies commented on his sides win “ We weren’t at our best today and we came up against our first zone defence of the season which threw us a little but happy to came away with the win and see all 12 players touch the floor and contribute.”
